About the Project
Two Sparrows Town started out as a project for the SoundingWCU Art Contest in the fall of 2020. The goal for this project was to find a way to honestly and respectfully explore the history of Western Carolina University’s campus as a Cherokee place. Throughout my time researching Two Sparrows Town, learning about the history of WCU and the Cherokee people, and talking with so many amazing people, I found the significance and importance of the discussions we were having was something was something others should experience. Thus, the Two Sparrows Town Project was born.
What is the Two Sparrows Town Project? Well, it's a series of interactive pieces written for snare drum, voice, and electronics. It puts the performer in dialogue with the land and the local Indigenous Peoples. There are different variations of the piece that I will be sharing here, some for solo snare drum and electronics, some for solo snare drum and speaker, some of a "DIY" variety.
As always, my thanks goes to Dr. Sara Snyder Hopkins and Tom Belt for their help. I especially thank Tom for offering his voice, his language, and his stories.
